History
At the beginning of 2000, two nurses and a chaplain from the Northwest Arkansas area meet at a RTS bereavement training conference. They recognized that parents spent a small amount of time with the hospital and had more needs that were not being met. With in the first year the Springdale Hospital, now known as Northwest Health System, St Mary’s Hospital in Rogers, and Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville all meet together to help families. In May 2000, The first parents meeting was held at the Jones Center for Families in Springdale, AR, and with the attendance the founders knew there was a great need for families after they left the hospital systems. In October 2000, SHARE held the first annual walk in remembrance at the St. Vincent’s Cemetery north of Rogers, AR. The group continued to grow and incorporated as Northwest Arkansas SHARE Parents Support Group in December 2002. By May 2004, the first annual Butterfly Release was held to symbolize hope. The group obtained IRS 501C3 tax status, in December 2005, to continue to meet the growing needs of the families. Now the NWA Share Parents Support Group, Inc covers Washington, Benton, Madison Counties in Arkansas; Ottawa, Delaware, Adair Counties in Oklahoma; and McDonald and Barry Counties in Missouri.
The primary purpose is to provide support toward positive resolution of grief experienced at the time of/or following the death of a baby. This support encompasses emotional, physical, spiritual and social healing, as well as sustaining the family unit. The secondary purpose of SHARE is to provide information, education, and resources on the needs and rights of the bereaved parents and siblings. The objective is to aid those in the community, including family, friends, employers, members of the congregation, caregivers, and others in their supportive role.
